Abstract

Black and mixed-race women, historically associated with less prestigious professions, such as cleaners and maids, are still under-represented in Brazilian higher education compared to white people. In Psychology, gender, race and social class overlap in the construction of subjectivities, requiring an intersectional approach to analyze the mechanisms that sustain structural inequalities. The aim of this study was to analyze and discuss the intersections of gender, race and social class in the academic and professional trajectories of black and mixed-race women who make up the first generation of their families to access higher education. 24 women from different regions of Brazil were interviewed and their accounts, organized according to racial identity, were analyzed using the MAXQDA software. The identification of core themes highlighted challenges at different levels, from macro structural barriers, such as  racial and gender discrimination, to more subjective barriers, involving the construction of identity. The findings contribute to the literature on intersectionality and can support student assistance policies by revealing factors that change the life paths of these women.
