Abstract

The present paper establishes a counterpoint between Hartmut Rosa’s and Rahel Jaeggi’s social ontologies – the theory of world-relations and the theory of forms of life – emphasizing the phenomenological nature of the former and the practice-theoretical orientation of the latter. The thesis is defended that, despite their differences, the theory of forms of life and the theory of world-relations are compatible and complementary, making a mutually enlightening dialogue between them potentially fruitful. The argument proceeds in four steps. First (1), the common reasons that motivate the authors to develop their social ontologies are examined. Second (2), the main traits of the theory of forms of life are outlined. Third (3), the same is done for the theory of world-relations. The conclusion (4) initiates a productive dialogue between the two approaches.
