The washing of feet
from the biblical practice to the tradition in the Church up to its current liturgical ritual in Brazil

This article aims to examine the reception of the rite of the washing of feet, or Mandatum or Lotium Pedum, in its main liturgical books over the centuries. Within this extensive framework of the historical development of the rite, it will take as essential the message that the washing of the feet follows the ritual order left by Jesus on that his last night with the apostles, and that the Church, His bride, faithful to this deposit, celebrates it within the liturgy of Holy Thursday. In view of the above, the article will be guided by the theology of reception, which is sometimes kerygmatic, sometimes pragmatic, and will comprehensively cover the evolution of the rite in the ritual books. To this end, we will first seek in the accounts of the Holy Scripture what is understood about the washing of feet and its real meaning given by Christ in its reception and application. Later, the article will historically discriminate of the ritual bloom welcomed by the Church with its peak development in the West. Next, a new norm promulgated by the changes in the rules given by Pope Francis will be brought to reason, which made the Roman Missal of the third Brazilian edition welcome it and made it become a spiritual and pastoral means for the understanding and participation of the faithful in the liturgy.
