Abstract

Different fields of knowledge have contributed to the understanding of literacy, such as neuroscience. Given this context, the present paper sought to synthesize the contribution of neuroscientific research regarding neuronal activation resulting from plasticity linked to reading processing in deaf people. To that end, a literature review was conducted to compile scientific findings on neuroplasticity and literacy. It is clear that deaf and hearing people commonly activate components of the reading neurocircuitry, such as the left ventral occipitotemporal area, but differ to some degree in the activation of regions involved in, for example, auditory processing in hearing people and motor processing in deaf people. The need for early acquisition of sign language was observed, as well as the importance of understanding the neural connectivity of language processing components for reading in deaf people.
