Summary

Brief History of the Journal

Founded in 2010, the electronic journal Educação por Escrito, linked to the Graduate Program in Education at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PPGEDU/PUCRS), aims to disseminate research carried out in Graduate Programs in Education and related fields. In doing so, it seeks to continue the persistent effort to train researchers in the various communities that make up our society, creating spaces for the dissemination and exchange of research.

Mission

The Journal’s mission is to publish original academic works related to the field of Education that contribute to the theoretical, methodological, and/or empirical advancement of the area.

Focus and Scope

The journal’s mission is to disseminate and promote the production of knowledge in Human Sciences, Education, and Teaching by creating and encouraging publications both independently and in partnership with other national and international research centers and institutions. Within this scope, the journal aims to publish original and unpublished scientific contributions, preferably based on research work, in the form of articles, special articles (by invited authors for extraordinary volumes and/or thematic dossiers), reviews, translations, and interviews. Submissions must comply with the criteria appropriate to an academic publication. The journal is not responsible for opinions, information, and/or concepts presented in published texts, whose content is entirely the responsibility of their authors.

Peer Review Process

Submitted texts are formally evaluated, initially, by the editorial team, which may request corrections and additional information. Texts that do not fit the Journal’s scope, fail to meet mandatory requirements, or are not properly revised within the established deadline will be archived. Once the submission’s admissibility is confirmed, the double-blind review process begins. Two independent, volunteer reviewers specialized in the subject matter of the submitted text are invited to provide opinions that will support the editors, who retain the final decision. Reviewers may request changes to the evaluated texts, recommend publication, or suggest rejection. Publication of the work is conditional upon the authors implementing any revisions requested by the reviewers. The evaluation process considers the originality of the approach to the topic, the consistency and rigor of the analysis, its contribution, and its alignment with the journal’s thematic line. The review system is double-blind: the reviewers’ identities remain confidential, and the authors’ identities are also concealed from reviewers. In the event of disagreement between reviewers’ opinions, the text will be sent to a third reviewer. If disagreement persists, the text will be evaluated by the editorial committee, and the editor may make the final decision. All authors will receive copies of the reviews of their articles, including comments from reviewers and, when applicable, from the Editorial Committee and/or the journal editors. The estimated time for the evaluation and publication processes ranges, on average, from six months to one year, and may vary according to the submission flow. Reviewers are expected to be objective, thorough, and ethical in their evaluations. In the event of any conflict of interest or difficulty in making a judgment free from significant external influence, they must contact the editors. Reviewers are also expected to contribute to the improvement of knowledge construction for the benefit of the authors’ development, including suggesting relevant references when necessary. The text and all other information made available during the evaluation process must be treated confidentially and may not be used for any other purpose.

Publication Frequency

The journal is published on a rolling basis.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides open access to all of its content, based on the principle that free access to scientific research promotes greater global exchange of knowledge.

Preprints

This journal adopts the principles of Open Science, aligning itself with contemporary practices that promote transparency, accessibility, and the dissemination of scientific knowledge. The journal accepts for evaluation manuscripts already made available on a reliable non-commercial preprint server, such as SciELO Preprints, provided that they are not simultaneously under peer review in another journal. The corresponding author must indicate, at the time of submission, whether the text is available on a preprint server and provide the respective DOI.

Research Data

The journal Educação Por Escrito encourages authors to deposit research data in institutional or thematic repositories, such as the Zenodo. If the research involved data reuse, authors are requested to cite the research data and include the information in the cover sheet file.

Principles of Ethics and Best Practices in Academic Publishing

Authorship

Authors are the original holders of rights and are responsible for the originality and authorship of their work. The publisher shall not be held civilly or criminally liable for any plagiarism or inappropriate content.

Originality and Novelty

By submitting the manuscript, authors guarantee that the work has not been previously published nor is it under review by another journal. Literal copies of previously published excerpts are not acceptable, except in exceptional cases and in the form of quotations. Illustrations and graphics from other sources must be properly credited or accompanied by permission from copyright holders, when applicable.

Policy on Scientific Publication Misconduct

To promote research integrity, strengthen transparency in the process, and ensure ethical publication standards, all material submitted to and published in Educação Por Escrito must comply with the Guide to Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication and the Open Science Compliance Form.

Regarding the retraction policy, in cases of misconduct Educação Por Escrito follows the guidelines adopted by the SciELO platform, in accordance with the Guide to Best Practices and the Guide for the Registration and Publication of Retractions. Retractions will only be published after analysis and authorization by the editorial board.

Conflict of Interest

Educação Por Escrito requires all authors, editors, and reviewers to disclose any financial or non-financial conflicts of interest that may influence — or be perceived as influencing — the reader’s interpretation of the article. Perceptions of conflict of interest are as relevant as actual conflicts. Whenever there is any relationship between authors and public or private organizations that may generate a conflict of interest, this information must be disclosed and specified in the article. If no conflicts of interest exist, this must also be explicitly stated.

Ethics Committee

Educação Por Escrito is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and follows its principles of ethics, transparency, and integrity in publishing.

Instructions for Complaints and Appeals

Complaints against the journal or its staff should first be addressed to one of the two editors-in-chief. As appropriate, they will conduct an internal investigation. If necessary, they may request additional assistance from the Editorial Board. Investigations must be conducted promptly and transparently.

Errata

With regard to the registration and publication of Errata (for correction, inclusion, or exclusion of information) and Retractions (total or partial), the guidelines adopted by the SciELO platform in its official documents will be followed.

Similarity Check

The journal uses Turnitin Originality software to verify manuscript similarity. All manuscripts are analyzed during the initial submission stage before being sent for review.

Confidentiality

The text submitted for evaluation is a document and will be protected against any form of exploitation.

Digital Preservation of Articles

The preservation policy is aligned with and subordinate to the policies and objectives of the SciELO Program.
