Digitalização e catalogação do conhecimento tradicional
uma abordagem a partir do papel da Organização Mundial da Propriedade Intelectual

O conhecimento tradicional e as expressões culturais dos povos indígenas e comunidades étnicas são patrimônio desses povos e da humanidade, devendo ser protegidos. Seu valor reside na contribuição à diversidade cultural e no seu legado histórico. Este artigo visa analisar o papel da catalogação e digitalização desse conhecimento e dessa sabedoria como estratégia para fortalecer o sentimento de pertencimento das comunidades e prevenir apropriação indevida. A metodologia escolhida é a análise documental de informação especializada com uma abordagem dupla: interpretativa, sistemática e teleológica. Como resultados, são abordados os problemas da apropriação cultural, são traçados alguns pontos de reflexão sobre o processo de catalogação e digitalização do conhecimento tradicional, e é destacado o papel assumido pela Organização Mundial da Propriedade Intelectual, bem como seu plano-piloto de digitalização como alternativa para salvaguardar esse patrimônio. O artigo conclui que a catalogação deve ser feita com respeito ao consentimento das comunidades, à sua cultura e identidade. Além disso, deve garantir a sua autodeterminação na tomada de decisões sobre seu patrimônio.
