Digitalización y catalogación del conocimiento tradicional
una aproximación desde el rol de la Organización Mundial de la Propiedad Intelectual

El conocimiento tradicional y las expresiones culturales de los pueblos indígenas y las comunidades étnicas son un patrimonio de los propios pueblos y de la humanidad que debe ser protegido. Su valor reside en su aporte a la diversidad cultural y en su legado histórico. El presente artículo tiene por objetivo analizar el papel de la catalogación y la digitalización de estos conocimientos y saberes como una estrategia para fortalecer el sentido de pertenencia de las comunidades y evitar la apropiación indebida. La metodología escogida es el análisis documental de información especializada con un doble enfoque interpretativo, sistemático y teleológico. Como resultados, se abordan las problemáticas de la apropiación cultural, se esbozan algunas reflexiones sobre el proceso de catalogación y digitalización de conocimientos tradicionales, y se resalta el rol que asumido la Organización Mundial de la Propiedad Intelectual, así como su plan piloto de digitalización como una alternativa para salvaguardar este patrimonio. El artículo concluye que la catalogación debe ser respetuosa con el consentimiento de las comunidades, su cultura e identidad. Además, debe garantizar su autodeterminación en la toma de decisiones sobre su patrimonio.
