Artificial Intelligence in the Teaching of History
ChatGPT and the Brazilian Military Dictatorship

This article analyzes the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the teaching of History, focusing specifically on the topic of the Brazilian military dictatorship. Through a comparative experiment using three versions of ChatGPT – GPT 3.5, GPT 4o, and a customized GPT called “History Teacher” –, the study examines the ability of these language models to answer questions about this sensitive past. The experiment aimed to evaluate not only the accuracy and objectivity but also potential biases in the generated responses, discussing the ethical implications of using AIs in the teaching of sensitive historical topics. The results indicate that although AIs demonstrate the ability to provide correct basic information, they show significant limitations in critical analysis and historical contextualization, reinforcing the importance of the educator’s role in mediating the use of these technologies in the teaching of History.
