The growing interest in the field of the so-called social pedagogy has been observed in Brazil along the past years. From the author’s own experiences, the differences between this kind of pedagogical work and the traditional school pedagogy are characterized. The paper supports the thesis that the guidelines underlying the current state education policies disregard the educational process as an essentially social experience, thus contributing to the displacement of this demand to the territory outside closed institutions.
