This essay focuses on the contemporary branding of Rio de Janeiro as a marvelous city. It explores the reinventions of the city for the Olympic event of 2016 by tracing a comparison between the preparations for this mega event and the International Exhibit of the Centenary of Brazil in 1922. It argues that these international events display the desires for an ideal city, the spectacles of modernity and the casting forth of the imaginaries of the media.Downloads
