Abstract

Postmodernity gives people a series of opportunity to reinvent themselves and, through, for example, social media, them can control alternative narratives about their own representation. In this study we aim to analyse the self-representation of the Brazilian swimmer Daniel Dias on his Instagram profile during the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games (which occurred in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic), which marks the athlete’s retirement. Using content analysis, our results show that the Paralympian used his Instagram profile to present himself as a victorious athlete, and reminded his followers that Tokyo would be his last event as a professional athlete, and with that seeking engagement from his audience. However, we also noticed that Daniel Dias lost opportunities to reach a new audience for this new life cycle which began with his retirement, using hashtags and tags only in a few publicity posts.
