Abstract

The article analyzes images published on two Brazilian journalistic portals, G1 and O Tempo, in news stories that narrate the lives of cities and people impacted by the mining dam collapses in Mariana and Brumadinho, Minas Gerais. The article analyses the dynamics of visuality that these images, associated with the news, promote in relation to this daily coexistence with a temporally complex situation, since it articulates past events, whose consequences are currently being experienced, and the imminence of other disasters, given the number of tailings dams in the region. Journalistic images and words then show an "everyday catastrophe", whose existence strains ideals of progress and modernity.
