Abstract

The author thinks that one of the main problems that faces intellectuals of the 21st century is that of finding the best ways of exploring the service of collective intelligence as well as the development of this huge common memory and this new analysis power of analysis simulation of- fered by an automatic calculation. “It is a new problem, the one of the possible intelligence, that was not faced by other generations that came before ours”, writes Lévy.

Author Biography

Pierre Lévy, University of Ottawa

Lévy is a recognized researcher of intelligence technologies and investigates the interactions between information and society. Master of Science in History and Ph.D. in Communication and Sociology and Information Sciences from the University of Sorbonne, is one of the most important advocates of computer use, especially the internet, for the expansion and ademocratization of human knowledge. His vocation for research came during a course with the French philosopher Michel Serres, and his focus of study focused on the area of cybernetics and artificial intelligence. In 1987, he released his first book, The Machine Universe - Creation, Cognition and Computer Culture. He is also the author of Collective Intelligence, What is Virtual? And Cyberculture. He became known worldwide from 1994 with the diffusion of his thesis on the "tree of knowledge", a system created together with Michel Authier that is composed of cartography software and the exchange of knowledge between communities, generating a virtual encyclopaedia in He is currently Professor of Collective Intelligence at the University of Ottawa.
