Abstract

Ortiz describes not only an evolutionary historical framework, but also a description of the cultural history in Brazil, Brazilian Culture and National Identity (1985), The Modern Brazilian Tradition (1988) and the Globalization of Culture (1994) Of cultural issues, involving the controversy over the construction of a national identity, but also points to the existence of an "international-popular" culture and identity, sustained primarily by the mass media. Next, I try to describe descriptively and synthetically the evolution of the author's reflection in these three texts. These notes on the trajectory of an author, important for the analysis of contemporary culture, especially in the Latin American context, are intended to present the fundamental problems of a theoretical course - as I have done with other Latin American authors. They do not pretend to compose a critical analysis - in the fullness of the term - of Renato Ortiz's thought, although some critical observations are aligned.
