the discomfort of transmission in Samuel Fux and Jacques Fux’s Meu pai e o fim dos judeus da Bessarábia

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the memorialistic “discomfort of transmission” in Samuel Fux and Jacques Fux’s Meu pai e o fim dos judeus da Bessarábia (2023). The narrator, Samuel, focuses on the reconstruction of the past of his father, Jacques’ grandfather, in order to understand himself profoundly. In this sense, this bibliographic-exploratory research, with a qualitative approach, is based on Bernd (2018) and Figueiredo (2020) to address the theory of prequel novels, transmission and their relations with memory, in addition to the memory according to Assmann (2011), Candau (2016) and Pollak (1989). The results of the investigation demonstrate that the process of returning to the past through the (re)writing of the paternal history intertwines the narrator with the father, whose search for the son can be understood not only as a way of finding answers about his ancestry, but also as a way of breaking the silence of his predecessors, providing the possibility of other forms of family relationships for future generations.
