The present study focuses on the diachronic development, behavior and meaning of the discourse marker afinal in Portuguese. A discussion of two semantic effects of afinal will be followed by a brief review of the history of its use. The view of conventionalized concessive and justificative senses proposed in the literature will be questioned here, and an alternative analysis will be offered, under which the marker afinal exploits its formal properties retained through the principle of persistence to trigger inferences of emphatic focus.Downloads
