Blindness tells the events that unfold during an inexplicable epidemic of blindness that affects the inhabitants of an unidentified town. The narrative follows a group of blind people, led by the doctor’s wife, the only character who can see, who come together after being isolated in a mental institution. The events that afflict the blind, the state’s treatment of the epidemic, the apocalyptic imagery, as well as the narrator’s interventions – which give the novel its essay-like character – contribute to reflections about the industrial paradigm that governs contemporary society’s way of life.
