Abstract

This paper aims to present, from a contemporary perspective, an overview of the texts that contains the bases of the idea of cosmopolitanism as elaborated by Kant. The philosophical foundation is given in the text “Idea of a Universal History of the Cosmopolitan Point of View”. The text “Doctrine of Law” contains the legal principles of the idea of cosmopolitanism. The text “Toward Perpetual Peace” contains the proposal of a minimum political platform to be adopted by the cosmopolitan movement implied by Kant’s proposal: such a platform is a minimum set of objectives, expressed in the form of practical rules of a cosmopolitan legal and diplomatic nature, which must be achieved if a Republican World State is to be made viable. The reason why Kant ultimately reduced the proposition of this Republican World State to a Federation of Republican States is highlighted. In the end, the article tries to assess, briefly, the political viability that the Kantian idea of cosmopolitanism has today.
