Abstract

This article examines the relationship between dance and the 25th of April through a focused analysis of key episodes in the history of dance in Portugal from the 1960s to the 1990s. It contributes to debates in cultural history and periodization by advocating a long-term perspective that moves beyond strictly political and economic frameworks, attending instead to both continuities and ruptures. Focusing on four historical moments—1961, 1975 (PREC), 1984, and 1996—the article situates the history of dance within the broader cultural and social history of the country, highlighting the interplay between aesthetics and politics. It argues for the need to analyze cultural transformations over the medium and long term and proposes the establishment of specific cultural markers that can be juxtaposed with the consensual markers of political and economic history.
