This article analyzes the violent criminality contention in the county of Rio das Mortes, Minas Gerais, during the 19th Century. A discussion is carried out on certain theoretical and comparative aspects which concern the historical process of social order monopolization and control. The main characteristics of interpersonal violence, criminality profile and its transformations along the time are also analyzed. The study points to a decline tendency in violent criminality rates as a possible consequence of the State's regulating activity exercised through the justice system.
