Abstract

This article analyzes the implementation of the New High School (NEM) in Brazil, focusing on the state network of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), from the perspective of Historical-Dialectical Materialism and the Analysis of Meaning Movements. The article aims to analyze the mechanisms and consequences of the subsumption of pedagogical work to capital within the NEM context, focusing on its implementation and the curricular guidelines adopted in the RS state network. It argues that the reform, despite the rhetoric of modernization and flexibility, reconfigures education at this school stage to meet the demands of a flexible, informal, and precarious workforce. The investigation reveals how curricular reduction, the devaluation of critical subjects, standardization via teaching packages, and pressure for results in external assessments act as mechanisms for controlling and alienating teachers’ work. It concludes that the NEM consolidates education as a tool for capitalist reproduction, intensifying the subsumption of pedagogical work to capital.
