race and the black grammar of brazilian politics

This article adopts a theoretical-analytical and historical-comparative approach based on a bibliographic review and critical analysis of classical authors and Black Brazilian intellectuals. It aims to demonstrate how the categories of fascism, authoritarianism, and populism, when reread through the centrality of race, reveal the structural foundations of democratic exclusion and authoritarian continuity in Brazil. It argues that modern Political Science has neglected the contributions of Black intellectuals in shaping these concepts, limiting the understanding of the relationship between democracy and racialization. By articulating canonical political theory — represented by Laclau, Mouffe, and Rosanvallon — with the racial critique developed by Clóvis Moura, Paul Gilroy, Stuart Hall, and Petrônio Domingues, the article proposes a racialized reading of the categories of people, representation, and popular sovereignty, showing how racial hierarchies have shaped Brazil’s political imagination. From this corpus, the field of racial relations emerges not only as an object of analysis but as a site of political theory production, whose concepts and practices challenge the racially neutral universalism of Brazilian Social Sciences. Finally, it argues for the existence of a Black grammar of Brazilian politics as a theoretical key to understanding and reimagining democracy in societies marked by structural racism.
