Teaching Bioethics Based on the Film Oxygen

Abstract

Bioethics integrates scientific advances with philosophical reflection on ethics. This activity discussed the use of stem cells with 2nd-year high school students, using the film Oxygen (2020) as context. The film presents a character who discovers she is a clone, addressing identity and the limits of science. The activity took place in three stages: a cycle of theoretical studies taught by Philosophy and Biology teachers, screening of the film with complementary reading, and an interdisciplinary debate on ethics and stem cell research. The debate allowed students to reflect and argue in a well-grounded manner, encouraging problematization and the active construction of knowledge. In a context of scientific denialism, the experience reinforced the importance of environments that promote critical thinking. The integration between Philosophy and Biology broadened perspectives and strengthened the understanding of the impacts of science on society.

Author Biographies

Artur Antunes Navarro Valgas, Marist Colleges São Pedro and Ipanema, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil.

He is a biologist and doctor in Animal Biology at UFRGS, with specialization in ecophysiology, toxicology and ecotoxicology. He is currently carrying out postdoctoral research focused on the physiology of conservation and the effects of environmental stress factors on ectothermic organisms. He also participates in teaching and scientific dissemination projects, with academic production oriented towards biodiversity conservation.

Fabiana da Costa Montin, Marist Champagnat School, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil.

Posses a master's degree in Education at PUCRS, a degree in Philosophy and a specialization in Methodology of Religious Education, with continued training in Special and Inclusive Education. He works as a teacher of Philosophy and Religious Education in primary and secondary schools, and also has experience in Red Marista. Develops social training, community education and theater activities, participating in workshops, coordination and cultural projects.

Andrea Pires da Rosa , Marist Brazil Regional Porto Alegre, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil.

Holding a Master's degree in Education from UFRGS, she has a Bachelor's degree in Pedagogy from PUCRS and a specialization in Inclusive Education and School Supervision. She works as an Educational Advisor in the Porto Alegre Regional office of Marista Brasil, with experience as a pedagogical coordinator and teacher in the early years of schooling. She develops work in learning, teacher training, and inclusive education, participating in projects and academic production.
