Phonological awareness in the acquisition of English as a foreign language
Keywords:

This research evaluated 40 students of English in a graduation course of a university in Porto Alegre on phonological awareness (PA) abilities. The aim was to level PA and to establish an order for its development in a foreign language (FL). A PA test was applied and results suggest that Brazilian students present a high level of PA in English since the first semesters of contact with the language. However, data indicate that time of contact with the language as well as formal instruction on the FL phonetics and phonology influence the development of PA abilities positively, reducing unsuccessful transfers of knowledge from L1 to FL.Downloads
