Although secondary in Rawls’s political philosophy, the theme of education plays an important role. In A Theory of Justice, education is linked to moral psychology and is crucial for learning justice and developing a sense of justice through social institutions. In Political Liberalism, Rawls revises his approach to education in the context of a pluralistic society, arguing that the education system plays a crucial role in political formation. In light of this, the purpose of this text is to discuss the compulsory nature of schooling in political liberalism in terms of civic education. To this end, the text is divided into three parts: the first discusses moral education in the renowned initial version of justice as fairness; the second explores the changes introduced with the political turn, characterizing education from the political conception of justice as fairness; finally, the third asserts the compulsory nature of schooling in political liberalism and evaluates the tension between basic freedoms and autonomy. The aim is to explain that, for Rawls, education should be geared towards political autonomy as a way of sustaining fair social cooperation in a plural democratic context.
