Alasdair MacIntyre’s theory of traditions of inquiry is his response to the problem of radical discrepancy between incompatible philosophical perspectives and their prima facie incommensurability. MacIntyre sees in the Enlightenment’s universalism the remote root of that very problem and therefore develops a vigorous criticism of its pretension to build a neutral field for the judgment of rival theses. At the same time, however, MacIntyre proposes that one of the distinctive features of rational traditions is their tendency toward transcending the contingent limits of their origins, aspiring to effective objectivity, and in line with such aspiration he also develops a systematic criticism of relativist and perspectivist positions. Some among MacIntyre’s critics see a problematic tension, or even a straightforward contradiction, in such double rejection by MacIntyre. It is shown that MacIntyre’s thought can avoid such objections and efficiently opposes both the theses of relativism and perspectivism.
