Abstract

The Church’s evangelizing mission comprises an integral process of Christian formation, in which the person is called to interpret existence in the light of the Word of God and to assume concrete responsibilities toward others and society. The Bible, catechesis, evangelization, and the Social Doctrine of the Church constitute mutually interconnected dimensions of the same ecclesial dynamic. Investigating this articulation through a dialogue with the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl and Edith Stein offers an opportunity to address categories that are important for Christianity, such as intentionality, embodiment, intersubjectivity, empathy, and personhood. The study proceeds from the hypothesis that Christian formation can be understood as a process that transforms the way one perceives, understands, and recognizes the other, so that professed faith may find its historical expression in social responsibility. First, the biblical foundations of a relational anthropology are examined in order to explore how Christian Revelation places the human person before God and, simultaneously, before one’s neighbor. Next, the relationship between catechesis, evangelization, and the Social Doctrine of the Church is analyzed with the aim of showing that the social dimension belongs intrinsically to the Christian proclamation. Finally, Husserl’s phenomenology of intersubjectivity and Stein’s analysis of empathy are presented as philosophical mediations capable of deepening the anthropological understanding of the recognition of the other. The study maintains that socially committed catechesis does not constitute an extrinsic addition to evangelization, but rather an unfolding of the anthropological, ethical, and communal implications of the Christian experience itself.
