The Centrality of the Word of God in the Life of the Church

A Magisterial Journey and the Emergence of Biblical Animation of Pastoral Ministry

Abstract

The article highlights the magisterial trajectory that led to the affirmation of the centrality of the Word in the life of the Church. It begins with a theological reading of a symbolic mystagogical representation of the Word as a life-generating force. It then turns to the conceptual foundations through a brief reflection on Luke 4:16–21, which sheds light on the understanding of the enduring and efficacious sending of Christ, whose mission remains alive in the Church animated by the Spirit. The reflection acquires particular relevance through the analysis of selected magisterial documents–Dei Verbum, the Aparecida Document, Verbum Domini, and Evangelii Gaudium–in order to demonstrate the development of magisterial thought concerning Scripture as the source and heart of all ecclesial activity. Finally, the article discusses the distinction between biblical pastoral ministry and the biblical animation of pastoral ministry. The research, qualitative and hermeneutical in nature, is based on bibliographical analysis, with emphasis on the theological-pastoral interpretation of the texts. Among the main findings are the recognition that, in practice, the Bible still does not occupy the vital center of pastoral ministry; the need for ongoing formation and prayerful reading that integrate faith, life, and mission; and the proposal of a correlational approach between Scripture and historical reality. The study concludes that authentic ecclesial practice is realized only when the community allows itself to be made fruitful by the Word, becoming a living witness to the Gospel in the world.
