Abstract

This study analyzes the intersection of forgiveness, memory, and mourning within Christian theology in postmodernity, using the work of Paul Ricoeur and René Girard. While Ricoeur discusses memory and forgetting and suggests that forgiveness implies an interaction between remembering and forgetting, Girard describes the resurrection of Christ as a metaphor of hope and renewal for marginalized communities suffering from mourning and violence. In this way, this work aims to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of theological forgiveness as an even more dynamic process than it is often understood, in social and psychological terms, proposing several ways to apply it ethically to today’s society.
