Malachi 2:17—3:5 contains one of the most interesting judgment scenes of the Old Testament and all Scripture. In this pericope, God approaches his people in the context of the sanctuary or temple to carry out a judicial process that would result in purification. This process reveals the centrality of the sanctuary in Malachi’s theology and, at the same time, highlights the eschatological character of the set presented. The analysis of the passage and its context shows, above all, the method used by God to distinguish between the righteous and the wicked—starting with those who maintain a covenant relationship with him—, in addition to indicating some parallels with the Yom Kippur ceremony and the relation of the judgment to the so-called “Day of Yahweh”.
