The divine judgment in Ezekiel 9:1-11 and its parallels with the Day of Atonement

The vision narrated in Ezekiel 9:1-11 is one of the most representative of the many that make up the book. It presents a judgment picture in which God commands the destruction of the wicked and the preservation of the penitents, with the sanctuary or temple of Jerusalem as its setting. This article analyzes this vision from its relationship with the themes of sanctuary and judgment, dominant in the passage in focus and throughout the Ezekianic work. It also explores the links of this symbolic narrative with the Day of Atonement ceremony (Yom Kippur), prescribed and detailed in Leviticus 16:1-34 and 23:26-32. Finally, it concludes that the image of the sanctuary/temple plays a central role in Ezekiel and in the vision of chapter 9, associated with a judgment of a typological and eschatological nature that foreshadows the Last Judgment. Furthermore, it identifies clarifying parallels with the Day of Atonement, which broaden the interpretative horizon of the pericope and enable an interesting dialogue with other passages of Scripture.
