Abstract

This article examines journalists’ perceptions at Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC) regarding the incorporation of artificial intelligence into public service journalism routines in Brazil. Drawing on an exploratory survey conducted with 31 professionals, the study highlights the coexistence of ambivalent dynamics between the demand for technological innovation and the preservation of civic values that underpin public communication. The findings reveal symbolic forms of resistance rooted in EBC’s organizational culture, intensified by the absence of clear institutional guidelines governing the use of artificial intelligence. At the same time, the results point to opportunities for employing AI as a supportive tool for journalistic routines, particularly in operational tasks, with the potential to enhance professional practices and expand the organization’s social reach. The analysis ultimately argues for the development of a critical and participatory model of innovation governance, compatible with the public service mission of broadcasting and informed by international experiences that seek to reconcile technological efficiency with editorial responsibility and transparency.
