Abstract

The Lava Jato Scandal, the biggest political-media scandal ever recorded in Brazil, was a milestone in the country's history. This study's premise is that journalists actively participate in the definition and construction of news and, thus, in the construction and interpretation of reality. This research aims to identify and analyze the perceptions constructed by Brazilian journalists about Lava Jato, and the role played by these actors and the media in covering it. To do this, it uses a qualitative methodology of application and thematic analysis of semi- structured interviews. Among the results, the recognition of the importance of Lava Jato, and the deviation during its course. Journalists understand that there was an alliance between the media and Lava Jato, and that the journalistic environment was atypical, with a high flow of information, rush, competition, and crisis in the newsrooms. Finally, the paper discusses the meanings that Lava Jato, journalism and journalistic practice acquire from these perceptions.
