Abstract

The emergence of the digital culture and the rise of the Anthropocene are two significant characteristics of contemporaneity. While the first refers to the multiple interactions and assemblages engendered by digital and network technologies, the second concerns the impact of human actions on the global environment, driven in the current context by these same technologies. The aim of this paper is to investigate the materiality of digital culture based on the energy and environmental costs present in the process of production, operation and disposal of the technological devices that integrate this culture. Therefore, we rely on bibliographic research and analysis of statistical data. We conclude that the current phase of digital culture is tributary to a constant exploration of nature, an aspect that contrasts with the imaginary of immateriality traditionally linked to cyberculture studies.
