Time, film, memory: the past's invention in Aitaré da Praia

Understanding how the early Brazilian Cinema incorporates figures of cinematic language is a work that still wait to be made. The process could be observed in the few preserved copies of the firt national films, to check if this incorporation was an alienated copy of European and American models or a creative peripheral adjustment to them. In this paper we try to observe the use of the flash-back in one of the classics of the “Ciclo do Recife” period (1923-1931), Aitaré da Praia (Gentil Roiz, 1925; Ari Severo, Jota Soares e Luís Maranhão, 1927), in an exploratory study that aims to establish a first categorisation of the flash-back in the Brazilian films in the 1920’s.Downloads
