The first year of the JB/Mesbla Amateur Film Festival (1965)
A contribution to the history of Amateur film festivals in Brazil

In this article we analyze the first edition of the JB/Mesbla Amateur Film Festival (1965), outlining the forces that motivated its creation and the involvement of the Brazilian cinematographic field in the realization of the contest. Through texts on the pages of Jornal do Brasil, we identifiy speeches and expectations around the festival, many of them centered on the formative importance of the amateur practice in the professionalization of Brazilian cinema. Finally, we will focus on the trajectory of filmmaker Xavier de Oliveira and the short film Escravos de Job. The only competing film in 1965 with a copy available for viewing, we analyze how the short film responds to the cultural field of the time and how the festival worked, in fact, as a gateway to the professional practice of cinema.
