autofiction as a reflexive act of insurgency in Jafar Panahi’s prison cinema

Since being sentenced to house arrest by the Iranian government, filmmaker Jafar Panahi has been making films that blur the lines between documentary and fiction by playing versions of himself. Based on the aesthetic
limitations imposed by a condition of censorship and denial of the filmmaking, this article analyzes scenes and elements from the films This is not a film (2011) and Closed Curtain (2013). In these films, he places his own subjectivity in a play that combines the reflexivity of the “new Iranian cinema” (MELEIRO, 2008; SADR, 2006; TAPPER, 2006) with an act of political insurgency against his repressors. In
this article, we analyze how the autobiographical (LEJEUNE, 2014; LANE, 2002), autofictional (DOUBROVSKY, 1977; COLONNA, 2004) and reflective (GIDDENS, 2002; RUBY, 1996) dimensions are imprinted in different ways in these films. In them, autofiction is understood as a place that tensions reality and fiction, person and character, denials and affirmations around the films and the director.
