Using the compilation film as a methodological and delimiting element, this article aims to present and investigate a theoretical framework capable of supporting an investigation between historical imagination and the functioning of image and sound archives nowadays. Our analysis revolves around the reappropriation of public and private “archive images” carried out increasingly by these audiovisual productions. It is a gesture that meets the logic of image archives in contemporary culture. Our goal is to propose a discussion on the historical imagination that the montages between these heterogeneous images give rise to. As a theoretical framework, we rely on an archaeological tradition surrounding the fields of study of cinema and communication, with an emphasis on the thought of Wolfgang Ernst, Vilém Flusser and Catherine Russel.
