This collection of texts addresses, with great pertinence and up-to-date, fears about public spaces, urban legends, "mad cow", and the risks that the development of biotechnology impose on tomorrow's humanity. The texts were collected mainly from public lectures given at the University Center for Training and Research in Nîmes, organized by the Vauban University Meetings association. In the introduction, "Risks, collective fears and society", Emmanuel Gleyze outlines a global and current picture of notions and definitions, from different disciplinary perspectives, of fears and risks, which allows the analysis and understanding of the different approaches that integrate The eight contributions of the work.
