According to the philosopher Jacques Derrida, writing (or 'arch-writing') is the precondition of any meaning. It is not just action, movement, thought, reflection, consciousness, unconsciousness, experience, affection, but all this and more, he says. For Derrida, writing designates not only the literal physical gestures implicit in pictographic or ideographic inscriptions, but also the totality of what makes it possible.
