About the Journal

Summary

Brief history of the magazine

Famecos Journal is a publication of the Graduate Program in Social Communication of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul. It was founded in September 1994 in print format, with semiannual periodicity. In 2001, it adopted a quarterly publication schedule. From v. 17, no. 2 (2010) onward, the journal began to circulate exclusively in digital format, benefiting from the technological resources available on the journal’s website. In its first issue of 2010,

Famecos Journal underwent a reorganization, adjusting the structure of volumes and issues per year in accordance with the guidelines of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT). Since its first issue in the exclusively digital version, the journal has included a presentation text contextualizing the reflections of the published works and the new directions of the journal.

It is characterized as a scientific-academic journal widely cited in theses, dissertations, articles, and books in Brazil, and is highly regarded in the field of Communication and related areas. In all its issues, it publishes original and unpublished articles from both Brazilian and international authors. The journal holds a national A2 ranking in the Qualis/CAPES system. Its editorial policy consists of selecting articles relevant to the field whose impact promotes the advancement of scientific research and the broad dissemination of knowledge, achieving national and international recognition.

Focus and Scope

The Revista Famecos selects and publishes articles with the potential to impact and promote the advancement of scientific research in the field of communication, in the following areas: Journalism, Advertising, Organizational Communication, Creative Industry, Cinema and Audiovisual, Cyberculture, Media and Culture, and Media Theory. Editorial Policies

Peer Review Process

Manuscripts submitted to the journal must be authored by holders of a doctoral degree, possibly in co-authorship with doctoral candidates. Research of an essentially bibliographic nature must not exceed two authors. Manuscripts with three authors—the maximum allowed—must always be field studies or broad-scope investigations and must be accompanied by a proper justification, that is, a statement detailing the tasks undertaken by each author.

Submitted manuscripts undergo a preliminary evaluation, of a sovereign nature, by the editorial team, which decides whether or not they will be forwarded to peer reviewers. This decision considers, in addition to adherence to the journal’s focus and scope, the maturity of the proposal and rigor in academic expression. At this stage, authors may be asked to make corrections aimed at formal adjustments. Manuscripts that do not fall within the journal’s scope, fail to meet mandatory requirements, or, once approved, do not comply with editorial requests will be permanently archived and may not be resubmitted.

Once a submission is accepted by the editors, two reviews are requested from specialists in the subject area. Editors base their decision on these reviews, without relinquishing their right to a final, non-appealable judgment. Publication is therefore conditional upon compliance with the reviewers’ recommendations. Manuscripts whose highly specific nature does not allow for the identification of qualified reviewers within the journal’s reviewer pool will be returned to the authors.

Reviewers are instructed to consider the originality of the article, the consistency of the research, and the rigor of the approach, in order to ensure publications that make meaningful contributions to the journal’s fields of activity. The review system is double-blind: the identities of reviewers remain confidential, and authors’ names are also withheld from reviewers. Reviewers are expected to be critical and objective in their assessments, avoiding idiosyncratic judgments and the application of criteria unrelated to the original intent of the submissions. In the event of any conflict of interest or difficulty in formulating an objective judgment (that is, free from doctrinal impositions), reviewers must contact the editors. Reviewers are encouraged to provide bibliographic and other suggestions to improve the manuscripts, including in cases of rejection. The text and all information made available during the evaluation process must be treated confidentially and may not be used for any other purpose. Articles must not exceed 60,000 characters in length.

Principles of Ethics and Best Practices in Academic Publishing

Authorship

Authors are the original rights holders and are responsible for the originality and authorship of their work. The publisher shall not be held civilly or criminally liable for any eventual plagiarism or inappropriate content.

Originality and Prior Publication

By submitting a manuscript, authors guarantee that the work has not been previously published and is not under review by another journal. Literal copies of previously published excerpts are not acceptable, except in exceptional cases in the form of quotations. Illustrations and graphics from other sources must be properly credited or accompanied by permission from their copyright holders, when applicable.

Error Correction and Retractions

Authors must commit to submitting texts written in appropriate language and suitable for publication. However, they must notify the editor if any error is identified, so that an erratum may be published.

Confidentiality

The manuscript submitted for evaluation is a document and will be protected from any form of exploitation.

Sex and Gender Issues

Famecos Journal supports the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines endorsed by COPE and encourages the inclusion of sex and gender considerations when relevant.

Policy on Ethics and Misconduct, Errata, and Retractions

The journal’s editors are willing to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions, and apologies when necessary. Authors must cooperate with editors in issuing corrections or retractions. Famecos Journal follows COPE guidelines for retracting or correcting articles.

Conflict of Interest

Famecos Journal requires all authors to declare any financial or non-financial conflicts of interest that may influence—or be perceived as influencing—the reader’s interpretation of the article. Perceived conflicts of interest are as relevant as actual ones. Whenever there is any relationship between authors and public or private organizations that could give rise to a conflict of interest, this information must be disclosed and specified in the article. If no conflicts of interest exist, this must also be explicitly stated.

Adoption of Similarity-Checking and Artificial Intelligence Software

The journal uses Turnitin Originality software to check manuscript similarity. All manuscripts are analyzed at the initial submission stage, before being sent for peer review.

Famecos Journal does not use Artificial Intelligence tools in any of the processes of evaluation or editing of submitted manuscripts.

Authors who use AI resources at any stage of the research must explicitly declare such use in the methodology section of their article, clearly indicating how and which tool was employed. Such use must comply with ethical principles and research integrity guidelines.

Authors bear sole responsibility for the content presented, including any support obtained through AI tools. Failure to disclose the use of Artificial Intelligence will be considered an ethical violation.
