Brief history of the magazine

Famecos Magazine is a publication of the Graduate Program in Social Communication of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul. It was created in September 1994, in printed format, every six months. In 2001, it began to have a quarterly frequency. From v. 17, no. 2 (2010), the magazine began to circulate only in digital format, benefiting from the technological resources available on the publication's website. In its first issue of 2010, Famecos Magazine underwent a readjustment, adjusting its organicity of volumes and numbers per year, according to the guidelines of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT). From its first issue in the exclusively digital version, it now has a presentation text in which the reflections of the texts published and the new directions of the magazine are contextualized. It is characterized by being a scientific-academic journal widely cited in theses, dissertations, articles and books of Brazil, being respected in the area of Communication and the like. In all their numbers, unpublished articles are published exclusively in Brazil and abroad. The journal has a national concept A2 in Qualis da Capes. Its editorial policy is to select articles relevant to the area whose impact promotes the advancement of scientific research and the wide dissemination of knowledge, obtaining national and international recognition.

Focus and Scope

Famecos Journal selects and publishes articles, essays and reviews intended to make impact and promoting the advancement of scientific research in the area of communication, within the following fields:  Journalism, Cinema, Cyberculture, Media and Culture, Audiovisual, Media Theory, Public Relations, Propaganda and Advertising. Collaborations must be accompanied by an indication of the section to which they are intended. It does not publish articles based on bibliographic review only, but encourage the submission of critical reviews, of only authorship, on the literature appeared last two years from the date of submission.

Peer Review Process

Manuscripts sent to the journal must be signed by doctoral degree holders, eventually in co-authorship with a doctoral student. Essentially bibliographical researches should have no more than two authors. Papers with three authorships, the maximum allowed, will always be field works or broad-spectrum studies, and must be accompanied by justification. Texts submitted to the journal undergo a preliminary assessment, of sovereign character, by the editorial team, to decide whether or not they will be sent to the referees, taking into account the maturity of the proposal and the rigor in academic expression, besides they adequacy to journal's focus and scope. Even at this stage, corrections may be requested to the authors in order to make formal adjustments. Papers that do not fall within the scope of the journal, that do not meet mandatory requirements or that, once approved, do not meet the requests of the editors will be permanently archived and cannot be resubmitted. Admitted their submission by the editors, two opinions will be requested from specialists on the article's subject whenever possible. The editors will consider them to make their decision regarding the papers, without giving up their right to express the final decision, which is irrevocable. The publication of the works is, therefore, conditioned to the fulfillment of their recommendations. Papers whose very unique nature does not find experts in the journal's peer reviewers crew will be returned to the authors. Evaluators are instructed to take into account the originality of the paper, the consistency of the research and the rigor of the approach developed, in order to guarantee publications that lead to noteworthy contributions to the areas in which the journal operates. Our review system is double-blind: the names of the referees will remain confidential, and the names of the authors will also be omitted from the examiners. Evaluators are expected to be critical and objective in their assessment of the work of their colleagues, avoiding idiosyncratic judgments and application of rules that are foreign to the original intention of the submissions. If there is any conflict of interest or difficulty in formulating a judgment as objective as possible (that is, without doctrinal impositions), the evaluators should contact the editors. We encourage our referees to present bibliographic and other suggestions that can improve the articles, including in cases of rejection. All the information provided in the evaluation process must be treated confidentially and cannot be used for any other purpose.
