The aesthetics of celibacy as an expression of its foundations

Abstract

In the post-Vatican II Ecumenical Council, Pope Paul VI answered the objections about celibacy with the encyclical Sacerdotalis Caelibatus in 1967. For that he presented the reasons for celibacy based on christology, ecclesiology and eschatology. Such foundations of understanding allow the candidate for celibacy to grasp the ultimate meaning of the gift received and lived as an expression of the depth of human love as a participation in the mystery of the incarnation of the Jesus Christ that culminates in his Passion, Death and Resurrection. In such participation, called friendship with the Redeemer, the ordained minister expresses the aesthetics of celibacy in its movements of configuration, availability and hope.
