The etymological analysis of the word “layman” opens several possibilities for the understanding of the Christian’s role within the Church and the efforts made in the last decades for create a theology of the laity. The usage of word “layman” throughout history, inside and outside the Christian ambience, displays a rich ambiguity. Besides the aid of etymology, it can be noted that the lay Christian finds in a pluralistic society the opportunity for the fulfillment of his vocation.
