Abstract

In this article we aim to verify how the characters in the works of Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are (re-) constructed and (re-) presented for contemporary television in the Sherlock series. Applying a stylistic analysis of  the pilot, we will observe the presentation mechanisms of the characters, showing the aesthetic and narrative resources used by the series creators to “update” the characters for the 21st century. We understand that the television industry has very specific characteristics that influence its style, although some characteristics approach the film industry, the television style has its history and specificities. And with that, we show how the series uses audiovisual resources to modernize the investigative-deductive method which made the main character world-renowned.
