Gregorio de Mattos, an infernal mouth?

Abstract

The present article is about Gregório de Mattos, the baroque poet, and aims at considering that his insertion in the literary canon and the criteria used to valorize his poetry might be strictly connected to the place of production of his discourse, the way he expressed his themes, and his insertion – his social role - in the context of his time. In my perspective these occurrences are directly related to the ideological positions of the historians of literature and the literary criticism, whose social values and cultural proposals constituted an array of ideas as diverse as the work of the poet from Bahia.
