Abstract

Childhood is the period of initial socializations and life challenges for people. However, when observing gender, race and class intersections, we notice that these challenges are unequal among individuals. In an effort to present the uniqueness of childhood’s social construction in the Latin American context, we propose a cinematographic cartography. Initially, we conduct a historical overview of the representations of childhood. Subsequently, we display Latin American audiovisual productions. We conclude by emphasizing the specificities of Latin America’s social reality and the challenges in recognizing and enforcing children’s rights. The legacy of colonization reemerges as experiences of social inequality and violence. We understand that reflecting on how childhood is experienced is essential for social change.

Rosângela Fachel de Medeiros, Federal University of Pelotas, Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

PhD in Comparative Literature from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS/Capes). She is currently a visiting professor in the Graduate Program in Arts (PPGArtes) at the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel). She is co-director of the Ibero-American Network for Research in Audiovisual Narratives (RedINAV) and co-leader of the Latin American Audiovisual Research Group in the 21st Century – OfCine (IFRS – Rio Grande/CNPq), with the research project “Insurgent Audiovisualities – Framings and Dissidences – in Contemporary Latin America”. Creator and co-director of the International Video Art Festival SPMAV – FIVA SPMAV (UFPel) and the International Video Dance Festival – FIVRS (UFPel/ECARTA).

Janaína de Azevedo Baladão, Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Translator and professor of undergraduate and graduate courses at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul. She is currently the pedagogical coordinator of Lexis - Language Center at PUCRS. She holds a PhD in Literature from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (2013), with the support of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes), and a bachelor's degree in Spanish/Portuguese Literature (2004) from the same institution. She is also a specialist in Spanish translation (2013) from the Gama Filho University of Rio de Janeiro, as well as a specialist in Advanced Studies in Spanish Language from PUCRS (2007). She has experience in the area of ​​Literature, with an emphasis on Modern Foreign Languages ​​and Literatures in the Spanish Language.

Silvia Elizalde, University of Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

PhD in Anthropology, Independent Researcher of the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) based at the Gender Studies Research Institute of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Buenos Aires. Author of Girls' Time. Identity, Culture and Power (Buenos Aires, Grupo Editor Universitario, 2015) and compiler and author of Young People in Question. Configurations of Gender and Sexuality in Culture (Buenos Aires, Biblos, 2011), among other scientific works. Professor of undergraduate and graduate courses at the University of Buenos Aires and the National University of La Plata.

Maria Eduarda Freitas Moraes, Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

PhD student in Linguistics in the Postgraduate Program in Letters at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), with a CNPq scholarship. Member of the Research Group Discourses in Dialogue (PUCRS/CNPq). Psychologist (2015) and master in Psychology from the Federal University of Santa Maria (2017). Specialist in Psychoanalysis and Contemporaneity from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (2023).
