Writers’ letters might contain relevant information on literature conceptions and creation processes. Flaubert’s mail reveals a lot about his aesthetics his thought about art. When it was published for the first time, at the end of the XIX century, it contributed to the literary consolidation of its author. Also, among the Brazilian critics of the time, this mail cooperated with the formation of an image of Flaubert as a writer who was extremely devoted to the style. In this paper, we propose some reflection on the critical judgment that Araripe Júnior developed about Flaubert when he read this novelist’s mail.Downloads
