This paper aims to discuss duration as a cinematographic problem through a genealogical investigation on the concept of duration in film theory and criticism. It intends to discuss three important moments in which the term acquired significant theoretical and critical value, in order to investigate the original problems that shaped the concept and to appreciate its significance in the history of film.
