The aim of this article is to discuss the “post-truth phenomenon”, chosen as the Word of the Year 2016 by Oxford Dictionaries, more specifically, its potential to establish itself as discursive dememory (PAVEAU, 2013a, 2015) towards the truth alienation in fantastic storytelling that reverberates in the contemporary democratic society. As introduced by Paveau from Courtine’s concept of discursive memory, the notion of discursive dememory is characterized by a deviation from the original meaning whose effect favors, in addition to the enunciator of that speech, certain context. Based on two controversial statements, one by Donald Trump and another by White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, we analyzed the enunciative maneuvers undertaken by the relevant enunciators allowing to understand that the discursive dememory, whether by amendment or resignification, acts as one of the argumentative resources amid language that grants to post-truth the status of a new normal
nowadays in the background of a crisis in political representation.
