Abstract

This article presents and discusses an approach to teaching about diversity through the use of multicultural literature. Apart from helping learners develop literacy skills, multicultural literature can be used as a tool to develop sensitivity and awareness to issues of equity and diversity in the classroom and in society (NAIDITCH, 2004; SMALLWOOD, 1996). The researcher describes an experience developed with both pre and in-service teachers that aimed at developing learners’ awareness to multiculturalism and diversity and transform it into social action (FREIRE, 2005). The project described in this article has resulted not only in the students’ ability to identify and understand cultural symbols and expressions, but also in the development of an appreciation of cultural values and different ways of explaining human condition.
